Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven (2000)
80 minutes, 4 tracks, no vocals, some of the most scary and beautiful music ever recorded.
RYM - 4.17/5
The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead (1986)
Many will argue that this is the greatest record to come from the 1980's. What do you think?
RYM - 4.28/5
Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning (2005)
Conor Oberst reminds me of Bob Dylan... dumb call? maybe. This is one of his best releases under the Bright Eyes project. He has since released a solo album and an album with his mystic valley band. Busy dude.

Kayo Dot - Choirs Of The Eye (2003)
The first album from Kayo Dot, a band that rose from the ashes of Maudlin Of The Well. This isn't for everybody, but those with an open ear and some patience are in for a special listening experience.

Widely acclaimed and hugely loved progressive/alt rock album from earlier in the millennium.
RYM - 3.95/5
Yndi Halda - Enjoy Eternal Bliss (2006)
Almost 60 minutes long with 3 tracks... this is a monstrous post rock album that will either thrill you and inspire you to do great things... or put you too sleep.
A win either way.
RYM - 3.94/5
The Hold Steady - Stay Positive (2008)
A straight up alt rock album that has really grown on me, I like a lot of people dismissed this band as garbage on the first listen but on further inspection found them to be pretty special... see what you think.
RYM - 3.54/5
Ghostface Killah - Fishscale (2006)
One of the best hip hop releases from 06 and yet another great release from one of hip hops most consistent performers.

Sinch - Sinch (2002)
An album from 02 that was largely overlooked by heavy music fans, full of great vocals and stomping grooves, I really like this album.
RYM - 3.45/5
The Afghan Whigs - Gentlemen (1993)
A really great but highly underated alt rock band from the early 90's, this is undoubtedly their best work.
RYM - 3.82/5

Pharoahe Monch - Desire (2007)

RYM - 3.68/5
Wale - The Mixtape About Nothing (2008)
One of 08's most acclaimed hip hop releases. Hip/hop mixed with Seinfeld samples sounds like shit... but it isn't.

VAST - Visual Audio Sensory Theater (1998)
Really cool alt rock record from the late 90's... as Lars from Metallica puts it "it's like a mixture of enya and the prodigy".

???
Is it me? Or has 2009 so far delivered very little in terms of high quality new music? Any thoughts? Do you have any recommendations or albums on your wishlist? Let me know!
Portrait - Complete Discography (2002)
An essential hardcore album from a largely unknown band, this is basically their entire discography (a few EP's) released on one record. Screamo + viola = fuckin cool.
RYM - 3.78/5
Mute Math - Mute Math (2006)
Really cool art/pop album, some would argue that it's a pretty disposable release but I reckon it's a fun and easy listen. New album out sometime soon, should be good.

Antony and The Johnsons - I Am A Bird Now (2005)
This album won the 05 mercury music prize and for good reason, it's a beautiful pop album. Antony shows why he is the worlds most amazing vocalist.
RYM - 3.76/5
Silverchair - Neon Ballroom (1999)
One of the most amazing Australian albums of the past decade, Daniel Johns really started to fill out his potential as a song writer on this record.

The new record from progressive/sludge metal giants Isis... ranking so far as one of 09's best.
RYM - 3.7/5
Jaco Pastorius - Jaco Pastorius (1976)
A classic jazz album, for those of you that dont know, Jaco is probably the pioneer of the electric bass.

Shugo Tokumaru - Rum Hee (2009)
Cool little release from the crazy little Japanese dude Shugo Tokumaru, more of an EP than an album, it contains 3 new tracks and a few remixes/alt versions of older tracks... still cool though.
RYM - 3.16/5
Extra Life - Secular Works (2008)
Amazing release from last year, one of the more original sounding records from recent times. Mixes touches of avant garde and prog with eastern influences... some of the most amazing vocals I've heard too. Check it out.
RYM - 3.4/5
